His nickname does not only reflect his striking physical resemblance to the greatest golfer who ever lived (check the Phil Ivey videos below), it also describes his own fascination with the golf course. Golf is a more recent hobby of his though and The World Series of Golf in which he took part and got eliminated (every hole represented another betting round for players) didn’t exactly provide an accurate enough reflection of his talents as a poker player, rather, it stressed his skills as a golfer, which quite honestly still leave some room for improvement.
Born in 1976 in California, Phil Ivey was to hone his poker skills on the East Coast, in New Brunswick, NJ, mostly at the expense of his co-workers at a local telemarketing company.
Having landed so far away from the entertainment and poker capital of the world, Las Vegas, at such an early age, did little to significantly affect his future poker career. After all, he still had Atlantic City and a fake ID card, and thus even as a teenager, nothing could stand between him and the glamorous world of live casino poker.
Nowadays Phil is recognized as a cash player, and he certainly does his best to live up to that reputation. Most of the Phil Ivey videos on this page are also about the cash games he was involved in. He is a regular at the “Big Game” at the Bellagio, where he played heads-up against Andy Beal. He was one of the most prolific members of “the Corporation”, a group of poker professionals united by their goal to relieve the aforementioned Texas billionaire of as much of his money as possible.
He is currently member of Team Full Tilt, (professional players endorsing FullTilt Poker) and can often be found at the online tables playing high stakes NL cash games.
Despite his cash-player reputation, Ivey has seen his share of success at the world’s biggest live tournament tables as well. He won his first WSOP event in 2000, scoring three more bracelets in 2002, and thus tying Phil Hellmuth for the most bracelets won in the same year.
He’s seen seven WPT final tables, making a total of about 1.3 million dollars off them, (check the Phil Ivey torrent featured below for details on that) and he proved successful in EPT’s 2006 Barcelona event as well, finishing second. Other tournament capers of his include his fabulous Monte Carlo Millions (see torrent below) victory for $1.000.000, and the Full Tilt Invitational win just a day after.
Phil Ivey has made more than $8.000.000 during his career.
