Phil Hellmuth is arguably the best poker player in the world today, and he is certainly the player with the most impressive all-time WSOP record.
Born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1964, Phil Hellmuth was merely 24 years old when he won the WSOP’s main event in 1989.
After that, he piled up 10 more WSOP bracelets in different WSOP events (didn’t win the main event a second time though). That gives him a total of 11 WSOP bracelets, which – like it or not – nobody else can match.
The WPT proved much more illusive for him though, as he failed to bag a title yet, but he does have 3 final tables and 20 money finishes to show.
In 2005, he took part in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, in which he blasted his way to the final through (not in this order) Huck Seed, Men Nguyen, Lyle Berman, Antonio Esfandiari and Paul Phillips.
The final saw him go heads-up against Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, whom he defeated as well.
He was a regular player on Poker After Dark (which he won twice in 2008). He wasn’t a stranger to High Stakes Poker either. He won a Late Night Poker championship as well, in the third season of the show.
His other poker-related achievements include books such as: Play Poker Like The Pros, Poker Brat, the Greatest Poker Hands Ever Played, Bad Beats and Lucky Draws.
In 2006, he was a commentator for Celebrity Poker Showdown.
In 2007, he was supposed to show up for the WSOP Main Event in a racecar accompanied by 11 models (one for each of his WSOP bracelets) but he somehow managed to wreck the car supplied by his sponsor (Ultimate Bet), and had to appear in a limo instead.
Besides his phenomenal career, Phil Hellmuth is also known for the bitter, often childish comments that he makes on his opponents, especially when he’s on a bad beat.
